Glutamine

 GLUTAMINE

L-Glutamine is the most abundant amino acid in the blood and in the muscle cells. Over 61% of the skeletal muscle is glutamine. It is classified as conditionally essential amino acid, which means that the body is capable of manufacturing enough to meet its metabolic needs. But under certain conditions additional glutamine may be required. For example, during intense training glutamine levels are greatly depleted in your recovery. It could take up to 6 days for glutamine levels to return to normal Studies have shown that L-Glutamine supplementation can minimize muscle breakdown and improve protein metabolism

Glutamine functions include the support of immunity, gastrointestinal integrity, secretion of insulin, neurological activity and muscle protem synthesis. Glutamine also increases your ability to secrete Human Growth Hormone (HGII)- which helps to metabolize body fat and support new muscle growth

Do You Know

Glutamine is one of the few amino acids that can directly crossthe blood-brain barrier.

Glutamine plays a role in variety of biochemical functions, such as:

  • Protein synthesis, as any other of the 20 proteinogenic amino acids.
  • Lipid synthesis, especially by cancer cells.
  • Production of ammonium to regulate acid-base balance in the kidney.
  • Non-toxic transporter of ammonia in the blood circulation.
  • Cellular energy, as a source, next to glucose. Nitrogen donation for anabolic process, including synthesis of purines.
  •  Precursor to the neurotransmitter Glutamate.
  • Carbon donation, as a source, refilling the citric acid cycle.

The dietary sources of glutamine includes the protein rich foods like eggs, fish, tofu, vegetables like beans, beets, corns, cabbage, spinach, Brussel sprouts, celery, kale, carrots, parsley and also in wheat, rice, papaya and fermented foods like miso

Side Effects

Glutamine may cause allergic reaction such as hives, difficult breathing, swelling of your face, lips, tongue, throat.

Common side effects may include:

     nausea, vomiting and stomach upset,

  • swelling in your hands or feet,
  • muscle or joint pain,
  • hack pain
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • Fatigue
  • mild skin rash
  • itching
  • dry mouth, increased sweating
  • dry mouth.

Dosage

An effective dosage would be around 10 grams per day and can go up to 30 grams depending on whether you have digestive issues and tolerance level.
